At Happy Puppies we look after dogs of all personalities, and dogs with food anxiety always need a little extra thought. Our two-step routine starts with one or two puzzle feeders for anxious dogs filled with dry food. The goal is to shift the brain into problem-solving mode. Research shows this state is the physiological opposite of anxiety, with dog puzzle feeders proven to lower cortisol levels and reduce stress behaviours like barking and restless pacing.

Once the dog has worked through that mental energy, and if they’re not the type to chew or destroy things, we introduce a lick mat with wet food. The repetitive licking activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s natural “rest and digest” response, and triggers an endorphin release that brings anxiety down noticeably. Dogs that finish their meal this way are consistently calmer than those eating straight from a bowl.

That said, dog enrichment feeding isn’t one-size-fits-all. We always watch how each dog responds individually before making this part of their regular routine.
The right bowl for your dog’s profile
Each bowl format solves a different need. These are the most useful options depending on how your dog eats and what they need.
🐾 If they eat too fast
Dogs that gulp their food end up with gas, accelerated digestion, and episodes of bloating after meals. A slow feeder bowl forces the dog to work for each mouthful: the pace slows naturally, digestion can improve, and post-meal discomfort is reduced. It is a simple solution with visible results from the first use.

🧠 If they need mental stimulation
For high-energy dogs, mealtime can be over in thirty seconds and leave them just as wired as before. A lick mat stretches that time to five or ten minutes and activates cognitive work at the same time. The result can be a calmer dog after eating: the mental effort has its own settling effect, though it does not replace daily physical exercise.

🧼 For daily use and hygiene
Plastic scratches with use, and those grooves harbour bacteria that regular washing does not remove. Stainless steel does not scratch, does not retain odours, and handles the dishwasher without deteriorating. It is the most hygienic option for daily use and the one that lasts longest over time.

🎨 If you want style and stability
Lightweight bowls slide around while the dog eats, sending them chasing the plate across the kitchen floor. Ceramic has enough weight to stay in place without suction cups or rubber bases. Durable, easy to clean, and with a design that fits into any room in the house.
